News Article: Yemenis Flee Village After Rare Volcanic Eruption

SANAA, Yemen (Reuters) - Villagers frightened by
unprecedented volcanic activity have evacuated part of southern
Yemen after rocks spewed from a mountain, a local official said
Thursday.
The official said there were no injuries or damage after the
volcanic activity in the mountain in the district of Taiz, some
160 miles south of the capital Sanaa.
"Hibshi mountain in Taiz spewed rocks and residents saw big
cracks opening on the side of the mountain during the past two
days," the official told Reuters.
He said geologists were studying the eruption. It is the
first of its kind in Yemen in living memory even though some
mountains in the Arab state on the southern edge of the Arabian
peninsula are considered volcanic.
