'Ice from the sky' hits Italy

AN Italian workman was hit on the head by a lump of ice weighing nearly two pounds which "fell out of the sky" yesterday. The 24-year-old man was not seriously hurt. "Luckily he was wearing two hats," a doctor at a hospital in Ancona said.

The incident, like a number in Spain in recent weeks , was one of four reported in Italy since Monday. A lump of ice "the size of a pumpkin" landed in central Milan yesterday, another hit a car near Bologna and a block weighing 11lb landed on a golf course near Rome. It is not certain whether the icy lumps are from comets or passing aircraft, or are just huge hailstones. Bruce Johnston, Rome
