Nicaragua's San Cristobal Volcano exploded last Friday, spewing out lava and raining ash over the cities of Corinto, El Viejo and Chinandega.

 

The highly active volcano, located in the northern region of Nicaragua, has been experiencing increased seismic activity since November 22, when it sent gas and ash 10,000 feet into the sky after having been dormant for several years.

 

Government officials issued warnings to residents to sweep the volcanic ash from their roofs and to protect their food and water.

Massive Volcano Eruption in Philippines turns "day into night," 83,000 flee

 

A massive eruption blotted out the sun and turned "day into night" around Mayon volcano in the eastern Philippines on Tuesday, pushing the number of displaced residents in the region to 83,000, officials said.

 

Loud booming explosions, akin to the sound of an artillery duel, were heard from more than 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) away in mid-afternoon as rocks and dark ash clouds shot up 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) from the crater.  "They are having the Pinatubo experience," said chief Filipino volcanologist.

Guatemala's Pacaya Volcano explodes

 

Guatemala's Pacaya volcano exploded on Tuesday, prompting officials to declare a red alert in the capital Guatemala City, 24 miles to the South.  The volcanic explosion spewed ash 6,560 feet into the sky and over surrounding communities.  Two rivers of lava flowed down the Southern slopes of the mountain.

 

Military troops were dispatched to the region to help evacuate residents.  Disaster officials reported that the residents of San Vicente Pacaya were also being moved. 

 

The explosion was the second this year.  Pacaya last erupted on January 16, forcing the evacuation of three communities.
