Nicaragua's San Cristobal Volcano exploded last Friday,
spewing out lava and raining ash over the cities of Corinto, El Viejo
and Chinandega.
The highly active volcano, located in the northern region
of Nicaragua, has been experiencing increased seismic activity since
November 22, when it sent gas and ash 10,000 feet into the sky after having
been dormant for several years.
Government officials issued warnings to residents to
sweep the volcanic ash from their roofs and to protect their food and water.
